Travel Insurance & Safety on the Ha Giang Loop
Every guest who books a guided tour or a self-riding motorbike rental with HagiangTrips receives travel accident insurance through BIC (BIDV Insurance Corporation), one of Vietnam's leading insurers and a member of the BIDV banking group — our complimentary gift to you, at no extra cost. If anything happens, our team handles the entire claim process with BIC on your behalf — you never deal with Vietnamese paperwork alone.
ℹ️ Rental-specific terms (deposit, damage cover) are covered separately in our Motorbike Rental Policy. This insurance does not apply to bus-only tickets booked independently of a tour.
What the insurance covers
| Benefit | Maximum payout / guest |
|---|---|
| Death or permanent disability caused by an accident | 200,000,000₫ |
| Death caused by sudden illness during the tour | 100,000,000₫ |
| Medical expenses following an accident (treatment, hospital costs) | 10,000,000₫ |
Scope of coverage — as defined in the official BIC policy
- Death or disability caused by an accident: the insured person suffers an accident during the insurance period, and that accident is the sole cause of death or disability occurring within 365 days from the date of the accident.
- Death caused by illness: the insured person passes away during the insurance period due to sudden illness.
- Medical expenses clause: accident-related medical treatment costs, up to the medical expenses limit.
- Also covered: death or bodily injury resulting from actions to rescue people or property, or to prevent unlawful acts.
Accidental injuries (e.g. fractures) are compensated according to BIC's official Bodily Injury & Disability Benefit Schedule (PDF, Vietnamese — your browser can translate it) — for example, a broken arm that's surgically treated and heals well with normal movement is compensated at around 15% of your insured sum, on top of separate medical expense reimbursement. In all cases, the total compensation paid by BIC — including all of the above — never exceeds the sum insured / liability limit stated on the insurance certificate. Full policy documents are published on BIC's official website (in Vietnamese — your browser's translate feature can help).

This English table is an unofficial translation for guest reference only — the original Vietnamese document (PDF here) is the sole legally binding version in case of any discrepancy.
The benefit levels above apply to tours departing on or after 1 August 2026. For earlier departures, coverage follows the insurance certificate issued with your booking.
Who is covered
All guests aged 6 weeks to 80 years who are legally present in Vietnam, for the full duration of the tour — from departure to return. Coverage applies automatically; we register every guest before departure using the passport details you provide at booking.
✓ Covered
- Accidents while riding as a passenger with our Easy Riders, or in our SUVs, Jeeps and Open Cars
- Accidents while self-riding — provided you hold a valid licence and IDP (see below)
- Accidental bodily injury, including fractures — per BIC's disability benefit schedule
- Accident-related medical treatment costs, up to the medical expenses limit
- Death by accident or by sudden illness during the tour
✕ Not covered (common exclusions)
- Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Self-riding without a valid licence and International Driving Permit — BIC cuts your payout by 50% in this case; always ride licensed, for your legal standing and your safety
- Serious or deliberate violation of Vietnamese traffic law
- Death caused by a pre-existing illness (only sudden, unexpected illness is covered)
- Damage to personal belongings, electronics or the motorbike itself (see our bike policy below)
- Bus-only tickets booked independently of a tour — see below for coverage on transfer buses included in your tour
Summary for reference only — full terms, conditions and the complete exclusion list follow the official BIC policy wording on your insurance certificate.
🏍 What about damage to the motorbike?
Self-riding on one of our guided tours: if your motorbike is damaged in an accident during the tour, you will not be charged for the repair. HagiangTrips covers it — no deposit, no surprise bills, no arguments on the roadside.
Standalone motorbike rental (booked separately, not part of a tour): you choose between two damage-cover options when you book — a Standard option where you're responsible for the actual repair cost, or a Damage Waiver option (small extra daily fee) where your liability is capped at a fixed amount. Full details in our Motorbike Rental Policy.
🕐 When Your Insurance Coverage Starts and Ends
If your booking with us also includes a transfer bus to and/or from Ha Giang, your coverage window depends on which bus legs you booked:
- Round-trip bus booked with us (to and from Ha Giang): coverage starts when you board the outbound bus to Ha Giang, and ends when the return bus drops you off.
- Only the outbound bus to Ha Giang booked with us: coverage starts when you board that bus, and ends at the end of your tour.
- Only the return bus from Ha Giang booked with us: coverage starts on your tour's departure date, and ends when the return bus drops you off.
- No transfer bus booked with us (you arrange your own transport to and/or from Ha Giang): coverage starts on your tour's departure date, and ends on your tour's end date.
If the transfer bus itself is involved in an accident: your BIC coverage still applies for the dates within your tour program (see coverage windows above). For how liability and support work in that case, see “Who’s responsible — depending on the cause” further down this page.
⛑ Protective gear we provide
Every rider receives a certified helmet — choose between a standard open-face helmet or a full-face helmet, both provided at no extra cost — plus elbow and knee guards, a raincoat and waterproof luggage bag. If you'd still prefer to ride with your own personal gear, you're very welcome to bring it — we'll simply set our provided equipment aside for you.
ℹ️ Armored jacket and riding gloves are included free on our guided tours only. On a standalone self-drive rental (booked separately, not part of a tour), these two items are available as an optional add-on in the booking box — helmet, elbow & knee guards, raincoat and waterproof bag remain included free either way.
🚨 If something happens — our 4-step process
- Tell your guide immediately. Our Easy Riders and drivers know every medical facility on the Loop and will get you there fast.
- Call our emergency line — +84 904 044 772 (phone & WhatsApp, answered 24/7 while tours are running).
- We take you to medical care and collect every document, report and receipt needed for the claim — you focus on recovering.
- We file and follow the claim with BIC for you. BIC's own 24/7 customer line is 1900 9456 should you ever wish to contact them directly.
🧭 Who’s responsible — depending on the cause
Insurance is one layer of protection. What happens next also depends on what caused the accident. Here’s how it works — whether you’re on a guided tour, self-riding a bike rented from us, or in one of our SUVs/Jeeps:
🤝 If it’s our fault
If an accident is caused by our own fault — for example, a traffic violation by our Easy Rider while guiding you, or a mechanical fault in a bike we provided that we failed to maintain properly — HagiangTrips is directly and legally responsible for making things right. This comes from Vietnamese law itself (a company is liable for harm caused by its own staff, or by unsafe equipment it supplies), not something we can opt out of through any booking terms.
In practice: we guarantee to cover reasonable and necessary treatment and recovery costs in Vietnam that remain after subtracting whatever BIC’s insurance has already paid — this is our minimum commitment to you, not a cap on our responsibility. If your actual costs are higher, you’re never left covering a legitimate gap yourself.
Example: for a broken arm case like the one above (~15% of your insured sum from BIC, plus medical expense reimbursement), any reasonable remaining treatment cost above that is on us if the fault is ours.
🚦 If it’s someone else’s fault (a third party on the road)
Not every accident is caused by us or by you — sometimes another driver on the road is at fault. In that case, two things apply: (1) your BIC travel insurance still pays out exactly as described above — it covers accidents regardless of who caused them; (2) Vietnamese law makes the at-fault driver responsible for compensating you directly, and since every vehicle in Vietnam is legally required to carry compulsory motor vehicle insurance, their insurer is an additional source of compensation as a third-party claim. We’ll help you handle this too — gathering police reports and evidence, and liaising with the at-fault party and their insurer — the same hands-on support we give with BIC claims.
🚌 If it happens on a transfer bus
Every licensed passenger transport operator in Vietnam is required by law to carry its own compulsory third-party and passenger liability insurance. That operator’s insurance is the primary source of compensation for a bus accident; your HagiangTrips-arranged BIC coverage applies as an additional layer for the dates within your tour program.
🏍 If it’s a self-drive rental accident caused by your own riding
If you’re riding a bike rented from us on a self-drive basis and the accident is due to your own riding (not a defect in the bike and not another party’s fault), your BIC travel insurance above still applies to your injury as normal. Damage to the bike itself in that case follows your chosen damage-cover option — see Motorbike Rental Policy and “What about damage to the motorbike?” above.
✅ Safety rules for all riders
Your safety is a shared responsibility. By joining a HagiangTrips tour, every guest agrees to the following rules — they exist because they work:
- Helmet on, always. Wearing the certified helmet we provide is mandatory by Vietnamese law whenever you are on a motorbike — as rider or passenger. No exceptions.
- Wear the protective gear we hand you. Elbow and knee guards are provided free and must be worn while riding. If you choose not to wear provided gear, you do so entirely at your own risk — and you'll be asked to confirm this in writing before departure.
- No alcohol or drugs before or while riding. This voids your insurance and ends your riding for the day.
- Follow your guide's instructions on speed, stops and road conditions — our Easy Riders know every corner of this road.
- Stay with the group. Solo detours without informing your guide are not covered by our support or insurance.
- Tell us about health conditions (heart issues, epilepsy, pregnancy, recent surgery…) before departure — privately and confidentially — so we can keep you safe.
Serious or repeated violations that endanger you or others may result in the tour being stopped for that guest without refund. We've never had to do it — and we'd like to keep it that way. 🙂
🛂Self-riding? To ride legally in Vietnam — and keep your insurance valid — you need a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit (1968 Convention). Read our full guide: Licence & IDP in Vietnam →
Policy last updated: 6 August 2026 · Effective for tours departing from 1 August 2026. In all cases, each guest's coverage follows the official BIC insurance certificate issued for their booking.
