Ha Giang Loop Packing List 2026: What to Bring & Leave Behind

Most packing guides for Ha Giang are written by travelers who did the Loop once. This one is written by people who ride it every week. There's a real difference between what looks sensible on a packing list and what you'll actually use on the road.

The short version: Pack light — one medium backpack (30–40L max). You'll be on a motorbike for 6–8 hours a day; a heavy bag makes every pass harder. Most things you forget can be bought cheaply in Ha Giang town. The one thing you genuinely cannot replace on the road: a good windproof layer.

Clothing — the only category that really matters

Ha Giang's weather changes fast with altitude. You can be sweating in a valley at 28°C and shivering on a pass at 1,500m within the same hour. Layers are everything.

🧥 Windproof jacket — ESSENTIAL
The single most important item. Not a raincoat — a windproof layer that blocks wind chill at speed. Essential year-round, non-negotiable.

🧤 Gloves (thin, windproof) — ESSENTIAL
Your hands take the full wind chill. Even in warm months, cold hands at altitude are miserable. Thin riding gloves work better than thick bulky ones.

👕 3–4 t-shirts or light tops
Quick-dry fabric preferred. Most homestays have basic laundry service (~30,000 VND/item).

👖 1–2 pairs of long trousers
For riding (sun protection, warmth on passes) and for visiting ethnic minority villages where shorts are considered disrespectful.

🧦 Warm socks (2–3 pairs)
Cold feet ruin long riding days. Wool or synthetic blend — not cotton.

👟 Closed-toe shoes
Mandatory for riding. Ankle support is a bonus. Bring one pair you don't mind getting muddy.

🧣 Neck gaiter / buff
Doubles as sun protection on dusty roads and warmth on cold passes. Small and lightweight — worth every gram.

💡 If you're on a tour (not self-riding): You still need the windproof jacket and gloves. Sitting on the back of a motorbike means full wind exposure without the body warmth from riding effort. Dress warmer than you think you need to.

Dust, insects, and wind — your eyes take a beating on open roads. Wrap-around style preferred.

Altitude + wind = you don't feel yourself burning. Apply before every riding day, especially on arms and neck.

💊 Personal medications
Motion sickness tablets if you're prone — some passes are genuinely twisty. Pharmacies exist in Ha Giang town but not on the route.

🩹 Small first aid kit

🌧️ Lightweight rain poncho
Compact and cheap. Available in Ha Giang town for ~50,000 VND if you forget.

🇻🇳 Vietnam visa / e-visa copy
Physical copy or screenshot. Checkpoints may not accept digital-only. Keep a printed copy with your passport.

💳 Cash (VND)
ATMs exist in Ha Giang town. On the route, cash is king — very few places accept cards. Withdraw before you leave.

✗ More than 2 pairs of shoes — one pair of closed-toe is enough
✗ Laptop — no use on the route, adds weight and theft risk
✗ Hairdryer or styling tools — homestays don't have the voltage
✗ More than 5 days of clothing — laundry costs ~30,000 VND/item
✗ Expensive jewelry — dusty roads, physical activity, not the place
