Most travel blogs will tell you October is the best month to visit Ha Giang. They're right — but they won't tell you that in October, you'll be sharing Ma Pi Leng Pass with 60 other tourists fighting for the same photo spot. This guide gives you the real picture, month by month, from people who live here.
Quick answer: The best months to visit Ha Giang Loop are October, November, March, and April. October has the most dramatic scenery (golden rice + buckwheat flowers), but March–April offers equally beautiful landscapes with noticeably fewer crowds. Avoid July and August due to heavy rains and landslide risk.
October & November: Peak season — stunning but crowded ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
October is the single best month for scenery in Ha Giang. The rice terraces in Hoang Su Phi turn deep gold and amber as harvest approaches, and the first buckwheat flowers (hoa tam giác mạch) start blooming across the Dong Van Karst Plateau — pink and white fields that look like something from another country entirely.
November keeps the buckwheat flowers in full bloom, and on 9 November the annual Buckwheat Flower Festival takes place near Dong Van — one of the most memorable local events on the calendar.

💡 Local tip: If you visit in late October, you catch both the tail end of golden rice AND the beginning of buckwheat season — the best of both worlds.
The honest trade-off: October and November are the most crowded months of the year. Homestays in Dong Van book out weeks in advance, and prices run higher than any other month. Book at least 3–4 months ahead.
March & April: The best-kept secret for most travelers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spring is our personal recommendation for first-time visitors. Temperatures sit between 18–24°C, roads are dry, mountain views are crisp and clear, and the landscape is alive with peach blossom, plum blossom, and mustard flowers across the valley floors.
April in particular is arguably the most balanced month of the entire year — not too hot, not too cold, relatively low rainfall, and noticeably fewer tourists than autumn.

In late March, the Khau Vai Love Market (24–26 March) takes place in Meo Vac — a unique ethnic minority festival where past lovers reunite for one day each year. One of the most authentic cultural experiences in northern Vietnam.
💡 Local tip: March is when the rice terraces are freshly flooded — a vivid mirror-like green that photographs completely differently from the golden October version.
September & May: The hidden gems ⭐⭐⭐⭐
These two months are what we recommend to travelers who want genuinely good conditions but prefer to avoid peak-season crowds and prices.
September is when the rice terraces begin turning from green to yellow — you're catching the early golden season roughly 3–4 weeks before the October crowds arrive. Tour prices are lower and viewpoints are yours alone.
May closes out the spring window cleanly — past the main flower season but before the heavy summer rains. Lush green hills, warm temperatures around 22–26°C, and the Loop largely to yourself.

December & January–February: Cold and quiet ⭐⭐⭐
Winter brings dramatic, misty mountain scenery and very few international tourists. Temperatures at altitude drop to 5–10°C in December and January — cold enough that warm layers and a windproof jacket are non-negotiable, not optional extras.
The landscape is stark and atmospheric — it's the Loop in a completely different mood. The Gau Tao Festival (H'mong New Year, January–February) is a rare cultural event worth timing your visit around.

July & August: The months to avoid ⭐⭐
We'll be direct: July and August are the worst months to ride the Ha Giang Loop. Rainfall is at its heaviest — not occasional showers but sustained daily downpours — and landslides are a genuine risk on mountain passes.
⚠️ Honest warning: Some operators will still sell you a tour in July or August. As a local company, we prefer to tell you the truth: the safety risk is real, and the experience is significantly diminished. If your dates fall in these months, we'd genuinely suggest reconsidering.
